John A. Sclavos Portrait Artist

Although John A. Sclavos has always been artistic, he was born and raised in the restaurant business. For over 44 years he operated The Glasgow Arms Restaurant in Glasgow, Delaware, which was started by his father, Constantine “Gus” Sclavos in 1937. As a young man, John worked with his father at the restaurant until he joined the Marine Corps during World War II. In the Marine Corps, he served with I-3-5, 1st Marine Division in the Pacific, and later went with the division to North China. He was recalled to duty during the Korean War. After John returned from China, he immediately rejoined his father in the restaurant business, but also studied painting under the artist Frank E. Schoonover of Brandywine School fame. He painted in what spare time the business afforded him. Many of his early portraits were of local politicians (one of a Governor of Delaware) and influential business people who frequented the popular restaurant.

Once he sold the business in 1989, John was able to dedicate his time more fully to his art, and enjoyed painting in his Delaware studio. Over the years he has been commissioned to paint many portraits, and his work hangs in public buildings, board rooms, universities, and private homes from Connecticut to Florida.

In 2002, John and his wife Stephanie resettled in Cecil County, Maryland, where he built a new studio and continues to paint. He is available for portrait commissions.
