Pyle Students
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, November 14,1887, George William Gage studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with Frank Benson, Philiip Hale and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1907-08. He also studied with William M. Chase. It is not certain when he was in Wilmington, DE but he was not a full-student of Howard Pyle, attending only the lectures, probably around 1909 or 1910.

Mary Franklin Garber was a student of Howard Pyle when he taught at the Drexel Institute. She was Anna Wheian Betts's cousin, In a letter to Richard Lykes, dated January 29, 1947, she recalled her experience:


Mr. Pyle would look at them for awhile. . . and there was always great anticipation in the air while he studied the drawing up for consideration. However flat or insipid it was, we knew that some most illuminating remarks would be made when he hadl'taken in' so to speak, the idea that the student wanted to express. Then his remarks would begin.

Born in Norwich, Connecticut,  Philip R. Goodwin was at one time a student at the Rhode Island  School of Design and the Art Students League in New York, in  addition to studying under Howard Pyle.

Graff, James Bell (Dates Unknown) PDF Print E-mail
Pyle Students
James Bell Graff, from Riverton, New Jersey, studied with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute in 1899 and exhibited his work in the School of Illustration's May exhibition held that year. His illustration Benjamin Franklin, done as a class assignment, was selected for publication, in the Saturday Evening Post. Also, Graff painted several black and white oils for Paul Leicester Ford's "Jannice Meredith" ,which was serialized in Callier's, in 1899 and then publishedin book form.  Other students who illustrated Janice Meredith as a class project were Anna Whelan Betts, Bertha Corson Day, Emlen McConnell, and Ellen Bernard Thompson.
